Composer Jenece Gerber explores questions of “meaning” in sound and music. As both singer and composer she is currently focusing on issues surrounding meaning and intention as conveyed through wordless vocal sound. She earned the Ph.D in music composition from the University at Buffalo (SUNY), Masters degrees in music composition and vocal performance from the University of Akron, and an undergraduate degree in ethnomusicology from Bowling Green State University. Her music has been performed by ensembles and performers as diverse as the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Tony Arnold, the Barton Workshop, Jocelyn Chang and Michael Leese, La Catrina String Quartet, the New York Virtuoso Singers, and Alison d’Amato and in special engagements at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo. She has earned recognition from ASCAP, Society of Composers, Inc., Music Teachers National Association, International Alliance for Women in Music, and numerous grants for research and study in Indonesia and Serbia.
